STILL NOT SURE?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AI really taking all the dev jobs?

No doubt about it, AI is reshaping the tech landscape. AI is reducing the number of entry-level jobs, while calls for mid- & sr- level engineers continue to grow.

But what if you could learn how to jump straight to Sr. Dev level?

At the TechJoy Career Academy, we teach you how to become a Sovereign Coder - someone who can work with technology at ANY level.

We teach you coding skills AI CAN’T replace.

Paired with our guaranteed hands-on experience, you can bypass entry-level and stop sending your resume everywhere without getting any callbacks.

How long does the program take?

Because our program adapts to you and your schedule, how long it takes depends on how much time you can consistently set aside each week as well as your prior experience. We have seen advanced students qualify for the internship in as little as a weekend.

Students have received job offers in as little as 2 weeks or as long as 12 months. Most students receive a job offer within 8 months after beginning our training program, although students with no prior coding experience can take longer than that. Students with prior tech experience often see job offers after completing the first 2 months of the program.

How many hours of training is it?

Learning to code is a marathon, not a sprint. We recommend committing a minimum of 10 hours per week, two hours per day to maintain progress. The program can be completed with as few as 5 hours per week, but expect to take longer. Consistency is key so you don’t lose momentum or have to backtrack if you take so long between practice sessions that you begin to forget what you’ve learned. Think of learning to code like learning another language.

What languages & frameworks will I learn?

Inside the TechJoy Career Academy, students learn python, JavaScript (JS), HTML, and CSS. Dr. Emily recommends all new coders master the basics in python - it’s currently the easiest starter language available. (Dr. Emily has over 15 years experience training n00bs how to program, and has tried them all.) Python is used by major companies like Google, NASA, and Netflix, and is one of the fastest ways to qualify for beginning coding positions in data science and data analytics.

After mastering the fundamentals & preparing for the tech interview, students move on to learning languages that they’ll use on the internship. For Full Stack, that includes HTML, CSS, nextJS, and react and a whole host of testing & DB infrastructure like PostgreSQL or cypress. For Data Science, that will depend on the particular project, but will likely include python.

What's the curriculum?

Below is the our full stack curriculum. Depending on whether your focus is full stack, AI, or low code, your curriculum may look slightly different.

Each week below is designed to be completed in about 10 hours on average.

Those with prior coding experience have been able to condense the first 8 weeks in a weekend.

Because learning to think like a coder sticks with you like riding a bike - no matter how long ago you learned it.

True beginners may need more than 1 week on some topics.

How fast you move is up to you.

Week 1: The 7 Basics – Start with the essentials and build a strong foundation. Learn variables, for loops, functions, and complete a portfolio project.

Week 2: Functions & For Loops – Dive deeper into using functions, loops, and if statements. Practice with a portfolio project.

Week 3: Functions, Lists & Strings – Master reading and writing functions, and work with lists and strings. Practice with portfolio projects.

Week 4: Data Structures and Algorithms – Explore data structures, understand the often misunderstood world of Big O, and work on a project involving loops and lists.

Week 5: Stacks and Queues – Learn about stacks, queues, object-oriented programming, and complete a project using these concepts.

Week 6: Arrays, Dictionaries, and Maps – Get comfortable with arrays, dictionaries, multi-dimensional arrays, and complete a project.

Week 7: Recursion, Sorting, and Searching – Study recursion, binary search, sorting algorithms, and work on a sorting and searching project.

Week 8: Abstract Data Types and Classes – Wrap up with advanced topics in data types and classes.

Weeks 9-10: Passing the Tech Interview - Apply your advanced problem solving skills in a live tech interview to move onto the internship phase.

Week 11: 1:1 Career Mapping - reverse engineer the perfect training internship to get experience on your resume that aligns with your specific career goals and job opportunities, whether that's in data science, AI, or full stack web development

Weeks 12-16: Explorer Phase – Master the fundamentals of web programming using JavaScript, HTML, & CSS while you sharpen your development & debugging skills so you are ready to push code into production on the internship. Join weekly live zoom sessions with Sr Software Developer mentors from mobile, full stack, data science & AI, as well as the aws cloud to explore your career possibilities.

Weeks 16-24: Internship & Promotion to Jr Dev – You made it! You are on your way to the job market and an amazing opportunity awaits. Learn the ropes deploying code live into production while you advance your problem solving levels. Your last step will be getting promoted to Jr Dev and going on the job market. Your resume won't simply say "intern" it will show your emerging talents with the role Junior Developer.

Weeks 24+: Exclusive Job Hunt Strategy & Ongoing internship experience – while you continue to bank experience hours on our internship deepening your skillset learning from our senior software engineer mentors, follow our signature job hunt curriculum that has our students getting job interviews weekly. In fact, more of our students got job offers in the last year than ever before.

Don't guess what jobs are looking for - get a proven step-by-step job hunt strategy that works. Each week is packed with video tutorials, hands-on exercises, and a supportive community ready to help you succeed.

What if I don't know which tech career I want yet?

Not sure which tech career path is for you? No problem.

What students are saying...

"She is always there when I have questions"

“Before I joined the program I took a bootcamp for software testing, I spent some good money on it and it didn’t work for me. When I got stuck, there was no one to help or explain to me. When I first saw The Joy of Coding, it sounded very welcoming. I love the idea of learning at Joy of Coding “work smarter not harder.” Dr. Hill is extremely knowledgeable and fun to work with.

She is always there when I have questions. I didn’t have much confidence in the beginning but she stands by me and encourages me in each step throughout the course.

She makes programming easy to visualize the road map and understand the process.”

Former Student

"Dr. Emily's Program Is Totally Worth It"

“I spent £2850 on a Bootcamp with eight other people here in the UK. This course took 11 hours a day, 6 days a week and by the end of it, I didn’t know how to program.

I then spent another three months self-studying on my own and became overwhelmed as there were concepts I needed help understanding. Emily’s program is designed to teach you where you are at and on your level. I already have grasped more fundamental knowledge of programming than what I thought I could.

I am looking forward to the next couple of months working with her and with her program. It is worth it!”

Arthur B.

Former Student

"Dr. Emily’s courses enhanced my problem-solving skills"

"Dr. Emily’s python course enhanced my problem-solving skills, which is very important for my career and life. Her mentor style helped me think through & solve puzzling problems. I still remember some of the exercises five years later!

The internship project experience helps a lot. It was the first time of doing a software engineering project for me. I learned how to design the back-end system and user experience. More importantly, collaboration with teammates and communicating with clients prepared me for future challenges."

Daniel X.

Former Student

"Her trainings are engaging and interactive"

"Dr. Emily did an amazing job making her courses as engaging and interactive as possible. Almost every interviewer I've had has asked about a project I've done for Dr. Emily, and they were always very interested! If you're unsure about taking Dr. Emily's program, you won't regret it!

Dr. Emily's internship project played a huge role in my early career as a professional. Having no internship experience coming out of college, it was this project that really helped me in getting the opportunities I did."
